Sudan and South Sudan are facing several crises all at once: Covid-19, revolution, unrest, civil war, starvation.. with the Covid-crisis maybe the least of them all. In our Social Studies class we have examined the situation in these two countries, which only separated in 2011, from multiple angles and conducted an interview with a humanitarian aid worker on the ground in South Sudan.

Social Studies – Was ist das?
Social Studies…
- … wird im Wahlangebot als zweistündiger Profilkurs in der Einführungsphase der Oberstufe (11. Klasse) angeboten.
- … heißt auf Deutsch Sozialwissenschaft oder Gesellschaftskunde. Wer Interesse an dem breiten Spektrum gesellschaftswissenschaftlicher Themen mitbringt, ist hier also gut aufgehoben.
- … auch das verrät der Name, hier ist Englisch unsere zentrale Arbeitssprache.
- … ist also ein bilinguales, fächerübergreifendes Unterrichtsangebot der gesellschaftswissenschaftlichen Fächergruppe für die E-Phase.
Social Studies soll eine Anlaufstelle für Oberstufenschüler*innen sein, die über den europäischen Tellerrand hinausschauen wollen, und aktuelle Entwicklungen weltweit aus historischer, politischer, geografischer und ethischer Perspektive beleuchten wollen. Diese fächerverknüpfende Herangehensweise soll auch dazu beitragen, den Horizont zu erweitern und Schüler*innen zu befähigen, über Europa hinauszuschauen und unser Bild von der Welt zu hinterfragen.
Im Zentrum des Profilkurses steht das weitgefasste Kernthema Empire & Aftermath, bzw. „Challenges of the Postcolonial World – Conflicts, Crises and Consequences”, das eine flexible Schwerpunktsetzung ermöglicht – je nachdem, was in der Welt passiert! – und verschiedene Themenkomplexe eröffnet.
2020: The Sudan – still haunted by its history in 2020
Topic: „Postcolonial Challenges and Crises: Revolution, Unrest and Social Inequality in the Sudan 2020“
The students are currently dealing with the situation in the Sudan, marked by the 2019 revolution, the 2020 coup d’etat and the effects of the Black Lives Matter movement, Covid-19 and the Darfur crisis. To better understand the political currents of todays Sudan, the class has researched the history of the Sudan as an Anglo-Egyptian colony and as a centre of cultures clash and slave trade.

Social Studies – ist das was für mich?
Am Ende des 10. Klassen steht die Wahl der Profilfächer an. Wenn du diese Fragen mit JA beantworten kannst, könnte Social Studies das Richtige für dich sein!
- Beschäftige ich mich gerne mit Themen aus den Fächern Geschichte, PoWi, Erdkunde?
- Bin ich überhaupt interessiert an gesellschaftswissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen?
- Möchte ich meinen Blick auf die Welt jenseits Europas und der USA erweitern?
- Weisen meine bisherigen Leistungen in Englisch darauf hin, dass ich hier erfolgreich mitarbeiten kann? (Social Studies ist kein „Nachhilfekurs“, es soll über den normalen Englischunterricht hinaus neue Herausforderungen und Anwendungsbereiche bieten)
- Bin ich bereit, an meinen Englischkenntnissen noch weiter zu arbeiten und sie einzusetzen?
